Responsibilities

Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for assisting in the strategic planning, organizational definition and overall growth of the assigned BBVA Compass - Commercial Banking Industry sector (Government and Institutions / Healthcare / Commercial Real Estate). This position will serve as Player Coach to relationship managers throughout BBVA Compass’ Commercial Banking Group within a geographic region. The position will be evaluated on individual production goals and a particular region’s sector goals. Responsible also for development and coordination of products and offerings in conjunction with BBVA NY and other BBVA entities. Will work closely with Regional Executives, Risk Administration and Credit Underwriting to assist the Industry Executive to develop, implement and market credit products and services across the bank’s footprint.

Duties will include development of new product offerings, marketing strategies, distribution channels, and sales generation. Responsible for origination, growth and management of loan portfolio and the overall profitability of that portfolio.

Major/Essential Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the origination, growth and management of an individual loan portfolio within a geographic location. Will also work closely with Commercial Banking Relationship Managers to provide financial solutions to the government and non-profit sectors...

  • Serves as the regional sector expert for Commercial Banking, constantly maintaining high degree of professional knowledge of all developments in industry. Communicates industry developments and new practices to Relationship Managers as appropriate.

  • Works with business officials of assigned industry sector (government organizations and non-profit organizations); their financial advisors and legal counsel, to procure negotiated and bid municipal and nonprofit business. Serves as advisor to clients on all financial needs.

  • Constantly monitors developments (credit, pricing, risk, regulatory) in all areas of municipal and nonprofit finance, insuring that product offerings are continuously revised to meet current market conditions. Follows market trends and developments to increase the region’s business in established and developing markets.

Working Relationships:

External:

  • This position will require frequent routine to complex contacts with the municipal and organizations, consultants, financial advisors, bond counsel, banking and finance executives, and other outside business executives.

Internal:

  • This position will require frequent routine contacts within the Commercial Banking region.

Qualifications

Skills, knowledge, abilities/competencies:

  • Knowledge of: All aspects of municipal finance business, including all required analytical and mathematical skills

  • Advanced knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to the municipal finance industry

  • Strong knowledge of industry structure, covenants, pricing and practices

  • Strong municipal and nonprofit background preferably with five or more years in nonprofit and government sectors.

  • Strong credit experience including analysis and underwriting.

  • Extensive knowledge of credit and non-credit products

  • Knowledge of municipal derivative products, VRDOs, swaps, etc.

  • Strong employee supervision and communication skills and techniques.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in applicable major field of study (finance, accounting, public administration) required or equivalent applicable progressive experience.

  • 3-5 years of direct experience in the specialized lending area as an RM, CRA or underwriter.

  • Or have 5+ years of general commercial lending with direct client exposure to the segment that they are looking to fill a specialist role in.

  • Possess key knowledge of the business segment and be conversant in current challenges and opportunities that are going on within the segment.

  • Must be comfortable taking the "lead" position for transactions that don't fall neatly into an identified market geography served by BBVA Compass.
